Composed on Hearing Japan’s Surrender
—In the Tune of Slow, Slow Strains
By SHEN Zufen
Tr. ZHAO Yanchun
The Hun horses I track;
The pipe in dream, alack.
For ten years who can in peace remain?
Really? I doubt again
When can we in north retake Mid Plain?
It’s real, the news of surrender comes.
All night the vagrants, they rejoice, gangs and drums,
Laughing all the way.
For the Pa’s spring tide we now stay;
Board homing boats we may.
Heartbroken, to the east sky I gaze,
Early the ember of pearl glaze.
Tall tree in chilly gloom;
Old ghosts from the new tomb.
Homeless, I need not go home alive;
In Silkton I stay but to survive.
Capital regained, a clan fete’s hard as e’er.
Hark, a triumphant air!
I face the wick; my tears blear the night there.
