Roses
by Shen Wei
Learning to differentiate you from baby roses and tea roses
has consumed my entire youth,
to secern your hue from flame and blood
further consumed the remaining warmth of my days.
You showed up as “pure contradiction" on Rilke's tombstone,
as "platonic flower" in Borges’ verse,
and arrived as shiploads of red roses
from Egypt and Sicily for the Roman Carnival
to adorn the emperor’s bath filled with women . . .
I remember the rose gala in faraway Hotan,
where small-thorn roses of Damascus were fed through a meat grinder,
bodies and bones crushed, to return as crimson flower sauce,
and, at a dust-swirling oasis, a bottle of Musalles wine
was infused with pigeon blood and 28 roses floating in it. . .
Roses are imaginations themselves but undoubtable.
Of all roses, I am able to save only one.
One is enough! And I'm weary of critiques.
Excessive interpretation harms the roses of the world.
Therefore, in the cooling ashes of my days, I write:
“Rose is nothing else; a rose is a rose.”
